Ship's Meeting
Shady Oak BBQ, Fort Worth, TX 11707.22, 1500 hours The crew of the mighty USS Regulator (NCC-2009) met this afternoon at our regular location. This month, after putting us in the middle of the dining area with all the "muggles", the management at Shady Oak placed us in the back room, as we always request -- thus keeping us as customers. We were very ready to "jump ship" if need be, as we can't hold a meeting if we can't hear each other. In attendance at July's meeting were Tank & Tracy Clark; Liz, Alan, and Michelle Goulet; Amy Pegues; Roon Marchant; and Scott Cornatzer. Uniform of the day was Class B; Officer of the Deck was RADM Liz Goulet, who presented a word search in lieu of the typical trivia quiz. Old Business: 1. As no one told the Captain what divisions they wanted to be in, he arbitrarily assigned everyone. If at any time anyone is dissatisfied with their Division, they should contact the Captain or the First Officer for re-assignment. Check the ship's website, under Crew, for details. 2. October meeting is the 25th Anniversary celebration of the Fort Worth Chapter of STARFLEET, The International Star Trek Fan Association, Inc. It will be held at BoBo China in Grapevine, TX. Invitations are going out to "old hands" -- former members of USS Comanche (NCC-71809), members of Comanche's mother ship, USS Joshua (now an independent Star Trek fan club), and so forth. E-vites will also be sent to other area ships, both in STARFLEET and out, as well as to members of the Region at large. New Business: 1. It has been suggested that the ship form a "Con Team" -- a group of people to attend conventions clearly representing the USS Regulator. This is a great idea, with the biggest problem being that of getting a group of Regulators to own and wear the same uniforms at the same time. (Few members of the ship wear any uniforms at any time.) This will be brought up again, and hopefully, interest in such a team will grow. 2. At last meeting, during a side discussion, it was mentioned by one of the Regulator members who'd been on the ship when she changed from USS Comanche to USS Regulator (NCC-73337), that there had been some dissatisfaction with the ship's new name. The historical Regulators, in the Old West, were involved in the Lincoln County (New Mexico) War -- who included Billy the Kid among their members (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lincoln_County_Regulators); another group of people who called themselves Regulators, from east Texas, fought a different private feud against a group called the Moderators. (https://tshaonline.org/handbook/online/articles/jcr01). Neither group had a positive image. This side discussion led to another, in which some of us mentioned names they liked for starships, from history and from movies & books: Sea Tiger, Batfish, Copperfin, Potempkin, Boxer, Bon Homme Richard, and others. Further discussion on the ship's Facebook group has led me to believe that many of the crew would prefer a ship that is more suited to our Marine’s mission of intelligence gathering and processing, and that along those lines a small Scout ship might be welcome. Research via the Internet found several ideas for a new ship’s class, and STARFLEET’s Department of Technical Services has others that have already been pre-approved. However, BGN Flynt has drawn up a new class, set (at my request) in the TOS era, of a design with a fairly large sensor dome, four hanger bays (each with two Type F shuttles), and the ability to land. We have tentatively named this class of ship after the famous spy (and romancer) Giacomo Casanova, and I’d like to recommend the name of our ship become the USS Nathan Hale, after (a) America’s first spy, the Continental Army captain who was hung by the British after he was caught, and (b) a USN SSBN that performed deterrent patrols in both the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans. Although no motions were made about this subject -- and none would have been accepted, as this was the first "official" discussion --the members of the crew present at this meeting seemed at least open to contemplating such a change. We will continue research and discussion for at least one more month. No action (other than research and discussion) will be taken until at least August, at which time we will entertain motions regarding the future name, class, etc of this chapter (subject to STARFLEET's approval, of course), as well as such incidentals as the Logo, ship's patch, slogan/motto, newsletter name, etc. Reports: Red Division -- New rates for SFI memberships were revealed to the crew, and the members are encouraged to check their DB entries to see when their memberships will expire. Gold Division -- Reminders to get newsletter articles in by 04 AUG, and a reminder that in addition to our ship's website and Facebook group, we have a Twitter account. Also, a scouting party will conduct recon at the Military Museum of Fort Worth in preparation for a Landing Party there. Blue Division -- No report STARFLEET Rangers -- discussion regarding the updated Awards Manual, and the new awards described therein. Also mentioned Tanks earning of Grade 10 (Ranger), Intelligence Officer certification, and Doctorate in Intelligence Operations. Marines -- Once again, all Marines were encouraged to take appropriate SFMCA courses (SU100, SU201, SU250, SU301), and SFA courses (IOIE). The imagery collection exercise is continuing: the targets are Historical Markers in Texas, and they should be sent to [email protected]. (This may be a trial run for the rest of the Brigade.) Other discussions involved movies, TV shows (including the upcoming Star Trek: Discovery), challenge coins, shipboard experiences (wet-water ships), and other random things. Next months meeting: Uniform of the Day will be Class B. Officer of the Deck will be MCPO Michelle Goulet. Clark, commanding Regulator, out.
