Captain’s Blog, Stardate 11708.18
The Captain’s Gig, with Commodore Tank Clark and Commander Tracy Clark onboard, departed Hanger Bay One on Thursday morning and proceeded to Baton Rouge, with brief stops along the way. The hotel at which we stayed, the Belle of Baton Rouge, was NOT the worst hotel I’ve stayed at, but was certainly sub-par. No complementary anything – except for parking and TV; the hotel staff -- who epitomized the term "no sense of urgency" -- didn’t give a flying monkey about anything, restaurant was closed for dinner and poor for breakfast (and EXPENSIVE). Nice looking and clean, but not pleasant. After interrogating the staff at the front desk, we finally discovered that, yes, there was a place nearby to which we could walk and eat dinner. The food at said establishment (“Pastimes”) was okay – not great, but not bad. The décor was awesome, if you’re a Louisiana State University Tigers fan. The service was – odd. You walk in, write down on a pad of paper what you want to eat and give it to a counter person. She hands you a couple of glasses for your drinks – which you fill and take to your table. When your food is ready, you pay for it, and then carry it to your table. Want napkins, condiments, silverware? Go find it. Basically, the wait staff just cleaned tables and carried your order into the kitchen. Meh. On Friday morning, we met up with MGN Ed Tunis and RADM Trisha Tunis. Toured USS Kidd (and had quite a bit of fun!); then went to a store called “Tiger Mania”, at which we spent too much money on LSU Tiger paraphernalia. Lunch at Red Robin, then on the road to IC. IC Hotel was nice, but again, no complimentary breakfast. As happens all too often, scheduling was off. Honor guard was supposed to meet at 1730 for a run-through before Opening Ceremonies at 1800… Ed and I were the only ones there for it, with Trish ready as backup. Opening was cancelled, as the food was ready too early for the Marine Mess (that was supposed to start at 1900, moved up because of the food issue.) Marine Mess was awesome, one of the better ones I’ve been to (and one of the few that I wasn’t an Officer of the Mess.) Brian Allen was a great Mr. Vice. Several fun toasts, some other great entertainments, just an overall blast. After the festivities were concluded, we enjoyed an adult beverage at the Canteen, and then off to our quarters for some much-needed rest. Stardate 11708.19 Saturday morning was Opening Ceremonies followed by the General Session. The honor guard made me upset – only three, the riflemen didn’t know how to hold the rifles… bleah. I know the SFMC has a drill manual – it would be ideal if persons performing Honor Guard duties would be knowledgeable in armed and unarmed drill. (At Region 3 events, they are… but, despite being held in R3, the IC Chair seemingly did not ask for the resources available to him.) General Session was fun-ish. Tracy and I sat next to a very excited Admiral from USS Dark Phoenix, Region 12, and her husband. Ed Tunis was promoted to Lieutenant General; Trish was promoted seconds later to Vice Admiral (so, as she pointed out, he has time-in-grade on her.) SFMC Muster was interesting. I haven’t seen so many of the General Staff in one room, although unfortunately the DANT and the DEPDANT weren’t there. COFORCECOM (newly promoted BDR Brian Allen) ran the meeting, and kept it interesting. SFSO also had a muster, run by Commander TacOps De Rush (who is Acting Deputy Director Operations, as both Michael Denman (DDO) and Ryan Pernelli, the former ADDO, have stepped down.) There were a lot of good questions asked, and good conversations had. A very enjoyable, if a bit rushed, time. The Saturday night dinner, (the “Admiral’s Dinner”) was neither as tasty as Friday night’s Mess, nor as fun. I find the lack of formality and organization at the Saturday dinner as compared to the Marine Mess detracted from my enjoyment, as did the overcrowded tables. (At the Mess, there were no more than 7 at a table; at the Dinner, there were 10. As STARFLEET tends to the large person… well, there you go.) Stardate 11708.20 We had a long drive ahead of us, so we did not stay for Closing (which was scheduled to start at 1000), but checked out, loaded up, got breakfast at a place called “Dot’s Diner”, and – following a brief stop at a Wal-Mart for more LSU stuff – proceeded on homeward. We stopped again in Alexandria for lunch (“Copeland’s of New Orleans,” at which the buffet was $22 EACH) and then again for a “gas & go,” arriving home after dark, and reporting for duty in the morning. A good, fun trip. Ship's Meeting
Shady Oak BBQ, Fort Worth, TX 11707.22, 1500 hours The crew of the mighty USS Regulator (NCC-2009) met this afternoon at our regular location. This month, after putting us in the middle of the dining area with all the "muggles", the management at Shady Oak placed us in the back room, as we always request -- thus keeping us as customers. We were very ready to "jump ship" if need be, as we can't hold a meeting if we can't hear each other. In attendance at July's meeting were Tank & Tracy Clark; Liz, Alan, and Michelle Goulet; Amy Pegues; Roon Marchant; and Scott Cornatzer. Uniform of the day was Class B; Officer of the Deck was RADM Liz Goulet, who presented a word search in lieu of the typical trivia quiz. Old Business: 1. As no one told the Captain what divisions they wanted to be in, he arbitrarily assigned everyone. If at any time anyone is dissatisfied with their Division, they should contact the Captain or the First Officer for re-assignment. Check the ship's website, under Crew, for details. 2. October meeting is the 25th Anniversary celebration of the Fort Worth Chapter of STARFLEET, The International Star Trek Fan Association, Inc. It will be held at BoBo China in Grapevine, TX. Invitations are going out to "old hands" -- former members of USS Comanche (NCC-71809), members of Comanche's mother ship, USS Joshua (now an independent Star Trek fan club), and so forth. E-vites will also be sent to other area ships, both in STARFLEET and out, as well as to members of the Region at large. New Business: 1. It has been suggested that the ship form a "Con Team" -- a group of people to attend conventions clearly representing the USS Regulator. This is a great idea, with the biggest problem being that of getting a group of Regulators to own and wear the same uniforms at the same time. (Few members of the ship wear any uniforms at any time.) This will be brought up again, and hopefully, interest in such a team will grow. 2. At last meeting, during a side discussion, it was mentioned by one of the Regulator members who'd been on the ship when she changed from USS Comanche to USS Regulator (NCC-73337), that there had been some dissatisfaction with the ship's new name. The historical Regulators, in the Old West, were involved in the Lincoln County (New Mexico) War -- who included Billy the Kid among their members (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lincoln_County_Regulators); another group of people who called themselves Regulators, from east Texas, fought a different private feud against a group called the Moderators. (https://tshaonline.org/handbook/online/articles/jcr01). Neither group had a positive image. This side discussion led to another, in which some of us mentioned names they liked for starships, from history and from movies & books: Sea Tiger, Batfish, Copperfin, Potempkin, Boxer, Bon Homme Richard, and others. Further discussion on the ship's Facebook group has led me to believe that many of the crew would prefer a ship that is more suited to our Marine’s mission of intelligence gathering and processing, and that along those lines a small Scout ship might be welcome. Research via the Internet found several ideas for a new ship’s class, and STARFLEET’s Department of Technical Services has others that have already been pre-approved. However, BGN Flynt has drawn up a new class, set (at my request) in the TOS era, of a design with a fairly large sensor dome, four hanger bays (each with two Type F shuttles), and the ability to land. We have tentatively named this class of ship after the famous spy (and romancer) Giacomo Casanova, and I’d like to recommend the name of our ship become the USS Nathan Hale, after (a) America’s first spy, the Continental Army captain who was hung by the British after he was caught, and (b) a USN SSBN that performed deterrent patrols in both the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans. Although no motions were made about this subject -- and none would have been accepted, as this was the first "official" discussion --the members of the crew present at this meeting seemed at least open to contemplating such a change. We will continue research and discussion for at least one more month. No action (other than research and discussion) will be taken until at least August, at which time we will entertain motions regarding the future name, class, etc of this chapter (subject to STARFLEET's approval, of course), as well as such incidentals as the Logo, ship's patch, slogan/motto, newsletter name, etc. Reports: Red Division -- New rates for SFI memberships were revealed to the crew, and the members are encouraged to check their DB entries to see when their memberships will expire. Gold Division -- Reminders to get newsletter articles in by 04 AUG, and a reminder that in addition to our ship's website and Facebook group, we have a Twitter account. Also, a scouting party will conduct recon at the Military Museum of Fort Worth in preparation for a Landing Party there. Blue Division -- No report STARFLEET Rangers -- discussion regarding the updated Awards Manual, and the new awards described therein. Also mentioned Tanks earning of Grade 10 (Ranger), Intelligence Officer certification, and Doctorate in Intelligence Operations. Marines -- Once again, all Marines were encouraged to take appropriate SFMCA courses (SU100, SU201, SU250, SU301), and SFA courses (IOIE). The imagery collection exercise is continuing: the targets are Historical Markers in Texas, and they should be sent to [email protected]. (This may be a trial run for the rest of the Brigade.) Other discussions involved movies, TV shows (including the upcoming Star Trek: Discovery), challenge coins, shipboard experiences (wet-water ships), and other random things. Next months meeting: Uniform of the Day will be Class B. Officer of the Deck will be MCPO Michelle Goulet. Clark, commanding Regulator, out. Ship's Meeting
Shady Oaks BBQ, Fort Worth, TX 1500 Hours The USS Regulator held her regularly-scheduled meeting at our normal location. In attendance this month were Commodore Tank Clark, Rear Admiral Liz Goulet, Lieutenant Colonel Roon Marchant, Chief Warrant Officer 4 Glen Wilkerson, Master Chief Petty Officers Alan and Michelle Goulet, Commanders Tracy Clark and Cynthia Crouch, and new/returning members Rear Admiral Joy Flynt and Brigadier General Byron Flynt. Roon served as Officer of the Deck, providing a very challenging quiz on various robots in sci-fi. Tracy won first place, with Glen in second. Zone 1 Leader, Captain Robert Zane of the USS Apollo, was also at the meeting. He shared some information about the USS Apollo's upcoming fundraiser event, at which they will have "Remembering Leonard", a crowd sourced movie about Leonard Nimoy, shown. Regulators are encouraged to support the Apollo in any way possible. Very few "new business" items were addressed. The 333rd MILINTGRU's challenge to the crew is an Imagery Collection Exercise, in which everyone is encouraged to take photos of Texas Historical markers. The person who collects the most by October will win a prize (to-be-determined). The ship's name was also discussed, along with a review of her history. Apparently, the people who chose the name "Regulator" all left the ship years ago, and some are still unhappy with both the name, and the way the name was chosen. Tank mentioned some of the ship names he liked: Sea Tiger, Copperfin, Batfish, Boxer, Potempkin, Bon Homme Richard, among others. If there is interest in doing so, we may form a "committee of the whole" to investigate the desirability to change ships (yet again!) in order to get a name more pleasing to the crew. In July, RADM Goulet will be the Officer of the Deck; Uniform of the Day will be Class B. Clark, commanding Regulator, out. Ship's Meeting & Change of Command
Shady Oaks BBQ, Fort Worth, TX The gallant crew of the USS Regulator met again to conduct our regular business, as well as to plan for future activities. Present today were Tank & Tracy Clark; Roon Marchant; Alan & Liz Goulet; Cyndi Crouch; and Michael Cross. Commodore Clark served as Officer of the Deck, with his quiz on "The Ultimate Computer" episode of TOS. Lieutenant Colonel Marchant will serve as OOD in June. Commodore Clark officially took command of the Regulator, with Rear Admiral Goulet as First Officer. Everyone is requested to join one of the three divisions (Gold, Red, Blue), and to choose a role-play position, if they so desire. The Captain reported on his upcoming skydive (scheduled for 0900 03 JUN 2017, as well as the new STARFLEET Academy web site. He also relayed the RC's update. Roon has accepted the position of Assistant Team Leader for the 33rd STARFLEEt Rangers, while Alan has accepted the role of Deputy OIC of the Marine Strike Group. The change of the Marine Strike Group from Aerospace (VMFA-333 "Phoenix Squadron") to Support (333rd Military Intelligence Group "The Yellowjackets") was discussed, and the OIC issued orders to the Marines to participate in an Imagery Collection exercise. Additionally, the OIC announced the completion and publication of the 333rd's Handbook, available on the website in the Library. Other discussions included upcoming movies, local minor league baseball teams, and other miscellany. Clark, commanding Regulator, out Stardate 11704.22 Ship’s Meeting/Klingon Dinner Thing, Ascension & St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Bridgeport, TX (First Officer Clark reporting.) Crew in attendance included Michael Cross; Liz, Alan, and Michelle Goulet; Tank and Tracy Clark; Glen Wilkerson; and Amy Pegues. The Klingon Dinner Thing was hosted by the Klingon Krew of the USS Regulator, as led by “Kommodore Klark.” The first order of business was our regularly-scheduled Ship’s Elections, in which we will be electing our next Captain. COMM Tank Clark was elected by majority vote of the crew, both those present in person and those who held proxies for those crew not present. CMDR Tracy Clark, as the only nominee for Blue Division Leader, has assumed that post. The Officer-in-Charge of the 333rd MSG, the Team Leader of the 33rd STARFLEET Rangers, and the Leader of the Klingon Krew remain Commodore Tank Clark, as he ran unopposed for those three positions. Red Division and Gold Division had no one running to fill those positions, and therefore remain vacant at this time. The duties of Red and Gold Division Leaders will be performed by the Commanding Officer and Executive Officer. Rear Admiral Liz Goulet has agreed to return to the post of Executive Officer, thus continuing our six year’s tradition of an XO who outranks the CO. Items discussed included:

Ship’s Meeting, Shady Oaks BBQ, Ft. Worth, TX (First Officer Clark reporting.) Crew in attendance included Michael Cross; Liz, Alan, and Michelle Goulet; Tank and Tracy Clark; and Cynthia Crouch. The crew decided to officially move the dates of our ship’s meetings to the fourth Saturday of each month, instead of the third weekend, to avoid conflict with many conventions and other group’s meetings. Items discussed the upcoming Ship’s Elections, in which we will be electing our next Captain, our first Red Division, Blue Division, and Gold Division Leaders, as well as the OIC of our Marines, the Team Leader of the Rangers, and the Klingon Leader. There are two candidates for Captain: RADM Liz Goulet and COMM Tank Clark. CMDR Tracy Clark remains the only nominee for Blue Division Leader; nobody has been nominated for the Gold Division or Red Division posts, which means the Captain and First Officer will assume the duties of the Gold and Red Division Leaders until such time as those positions are filled. Additionally, as no nominations were made for the Marine Officer-in-Charge, the Ranger Team Leader, or the Klingon Leader, Tank Clark is automatically returned for those three positions. April’s meeting will be held at Ascension & St Mark’s Episcopal Church in Bridgeport; it will be a pot-luck Klingon Dinner Thing, celebrating All Things Klingon, as well as the ship’s elections. We also discussed upcoming, current, and past movies, and the Captain related his experiences at All-Con. Clark out. Stardate 11702.18 Ship’s Meeting, Shady Oaks BBQ, Ft. Worth, TX (First Officer Clark reporting.) Our February ship’s meeting was great fun, as usual, but it may be the last “3rd Saturday” the ship will meet upon, at least as our regular weekend. Crew in attendance included Michael Cross, Roon Marchant, Glen Wilkerson; Liz, Alan, and Michelle Goulet; Tank and Tracy Clark; and Cynthia Crouch. Items discussed the upcoming Ship’s Elections, in which we will be electing our next Captain, our first Red Division, Blue Division, and Gold Division Leaders, as well as the OIC of our Marines, the Team Leader of the Rangers, and the Klingon Leader. March’s normal meeting weekend is the same weekend as All-Con, a local convention that several of our members attend regularly, so it was decided to move March’s meeting from the 18th to the 25th. As April’s meeting (and Klingon Dinner Thing potluck, and awards/promotions, and ship’s elections) has already been moved to the fourth Saturday (to accommodate Easter weekend being the third weekend), it was mentioned that “doing something two times in a row might make it a tradition.” Conversation has thus begun about moving our regularly scheduled meetings to the 4th Saturday of each month. So far, most of the crew who have voiced an opinion are favorable to the change. Two nominations were made (and seconded) for the Captaincy: RADM Liz Goulet and COMM Tank Clark. A nomination was also put forth (and seconded) for CMDR Tracy Clark to be Blue Division Leader; nobody has been nominated for the Gold Division or Red Division posts. Additionally, no nominations have yet been made for the Marine Officer-in-Charge, the Ranger Team Leader, or the Klingon Leader. No activities past the ship’s elections have been scheduled, as it is assumed the new Captain will wish to guide us in our path to our no-doubt glorious future. Clark out. Stardate 11701.21
Ship’s Meeting, Shady Oaks BBQ, Ft. Worth, TX Our January ship’s meeting has become, in recent years, our Holiday Party. Not much business was conducted, but we did enjoy a “Feringi Gift Exchange” (think “white elephant”). Crew in attendance included Glen Wilkerson; Liz, Alan, and Michelle Goulet; Tank and Tracy Clark; and Cynthia Crouch. XO Tank Clark filled in for our missing Captain, Michael Cross. Items discussed the upcoming Ship’s Elections, in which we will be electing our next Captain, our first Red Division, Blue Division, and Gold Division Leaders, as well as the OIC of our Marines, the Team Leader of the Rangers, and the Klingon Leader. We also chatted about upcoming and in-cinema movies, U.S. national politics, and assorted other things of varying importance. Ship’s Meeting, Shady Oaks BBQ, Ft. Worth, TX
Once again, the crew of the mighty Regulator met to have fun, eat & drink together, celebrate our glories and plot for new triumphs. Crew in attendance included Michael Cross; Glen Wilkerson; Liz, Alan, and Michelle Goulet; Tank and Tracy Clark; and Roon Marchant. Items discussed included the Charity Dinner on 5 Nov, at which $641.00 was raised for our two charities; the Build-A-Bear Landing Party,; and the Game Day at Xpertek, sponsored by Perry and Melissa Brulotte. Future events discussed included the opening weekend of Star Wars: Rogue One, the Holiday Ferengi Gift Exchange at the January meeting, and the nominations for next year’s Ship’s Elections. |
